Riot Tour
On September 29th, LMU’s Game Development Club had the honor of touring Riot’s LA campus for the first time. The event was organized with the help of Mina Hur and Samantha Garcia, who oversee Riot’s University recruitment and talent acquisition.
We were guided by Samantha and Mina around the campus, showing us iconic landmarks like the Tibbers and Annie statue, and describing how a typical Riot employee uses each of the facilities around the premises.
While the campus was undeniably beautiful and filled with fun spaces, my favorite part of the tour was sitting in front of a panel of Riot employees and learning about each of their experiences. Each of our club members had the opportunity to ask the panel a question or two, and the panel did a great job giving us a better understanding of the gaming industry as well as the different paths we could take to break into it.
Overall, this was an amazing experience. It has given me the boost of inspiration I needed for my latest projects, and I now have multiple connections at Riot. I feel incredibly lucky to have been a part of this event.
Social Media Manager
I am proud to announce my new position as the Social Media Manager and newest E-board member of LMU’s Game Development Club! It’s been great getting to work with a group of people who share the same passion for making games as I do.
My duties in this position include running our club’s Instagram and LinkedIn pages, creating graphics such as flyers for upcoming events, and taking photos during meetings and events to post. We are also working on launching a website for the club this year.
I am so excited for what’s to come. I am happy to be more involved in a community of gamers who share my interests.
iD Tech Instructor
At the beginning of 2023, I had the privilege of teaching kids ages 5-17. I taught them general STEM subjects such as Geometry and Python coding. Over the summer, however, I was able to instruct private lessons and camps on the fundamentals of Game Design, Minecraft command blocks and modding with Java, and Game Development with Unity. This was such an awesome experience!
This not only gave me teaching experience with kids but also broadened my outlook on the future of the gaming industry. When I was growing up, gaming was a huge part of my life, but I never considered a career in the industry as a realistic choice. Now having met so many kids with the same passion for making games as I have now, it is clear that the future of gaming is bright. This experience has filled me with inspiration and drive for my own career.
Of course, with a summer full of making games and teaching kids how to make games, this position also helped me sharpen my own game-making skills. After working at iD Tech, I can certainly say I am a better game developer than I ever was, and I am determined to keep improving.
